  1. Who forms the government? If a political party wins the majority of seats in the House of Commons, it always forms the government. (Nelson, p.28) If a political party wins the most seats in the House of Commons, but not the majority of seats, it usually forms the government. To stay in power, this party will need to negotiate for the support of at least one other party. They need more than 50 percent of MP’s to vote for the government’s proposals. (Nelson, p. 28)

  2. CRITICAL THINKING CHALLENGE If you were prime minister, to what extent would you work with the opposition? (Textbook p. 28)

  3. The Role of MP’s • MP’s have two key responsibilities: • Represent their constituents • Create legislation for the peace, order, and good government for all Canadians • Constituent = someone who lives in a riding and is represented by an elected official • MP’s spend most of their time in Commons Chamber, where they debate and vote on bills

  4. Commons Chamber

  5. Alberta Political Ridings • Alberta is divided into several different ridings or constituencies • Each riding has an elected MP • The MP represents all of the people in that area
