  1. SCAR/COMNAP Joint Committee on Antarctic Data Management The SCAR/COMNAP Joint Committee on Antarctic Data Management IPY Data Management workshop, 3 March 2006 Taco de Bruin JCADM Chief Officer Co-chair IPY Subcommittee on Data Policy and Management

  2. SCAR/COMNAP Joint Committee on Antarctic Data Management Antarctic Treaty, Article III – 1c: ....the Contracting Parties agree...: Scientific observations and results from Antarctica shall be exchanged and made freely available

  3. SCAR/COMNAP Joint Committee on Antarctic Data Management The Joint Committee on Antarctic Data Management (JCADM) was established by SCAR and COMNAP in 1997. • SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE ON ANTARCTIC RESEARCH (SCAR) • Conduct and coordinate scientific research in Antarctica • Membership of 31 nations • COUNCIL OF MANAGERS OF NATIONAL ANTARCTIC PROGRAMMES (COMNAP) • Facilitate scientific research • Emphasis on logistics and safety • Membership of 29 nations

  4. SCAR/COMNAP Joint Committee on Antarctic Data Management • Members of JCADM are: • the managers of the National Antarctic Data Centres (NADC) • or a relevant national contact if a NADC has not yet been established Currently 30 nations are involved in JCADM: Argentina EstoniaKorea Russia United States Australia Finland Malaysia Spain Uruguay Belgium France Netherlands South Africa Bulgaria Germany New Zealand Sweden Canada India Norway Switzerland Chile Italy Peru Ukraine China JapanPoland United Kingdom

  5. SCAR/COMNAP Joint Committee on Antarctic Data Management • JCADM Terms of Reference: • Advise SCAR and COMNAP on data management issues • Promote data management within the Antarctic scientific community • Recruit and assist National Antarctic Data Centres (NADC) • Advise and assist in establishing (national) Antarctic data management policies and priorities • Coordinate the development of the Antarctic Master Directory • Further data access

  6. SCAR/COMNAP Joint Committee on Antarctic Data Management • Antarctic Master Directory (AMD) • Global inventory of Antarctic and Southern Ocean dataset descriptions • online, searchable data base of Antarctic data set descriptions • data set descriptions are in the Directory Interchange Format (DIF) • contains over 3500 data set descriptions and is the largest directory of Antarctic data set descriptions • Data sets range from a few (but unique!) observations at a particular time and place to millions of observations over many years and large areas • hosted by NASA’s Global Change Master Directory (GCMD)
