  1. Question Diagramming Used to complete short answer and extended response questions.

  2. Question Diagram • WHAT IS IT? Question Diagramming is a strategy used to visually help you see what specifically you are being asked to answer in written response questions. It also helps you organize the information you are going to include in your answer. The goal of using question diagramming is to help you become better at answering written response questions.

  3. Steps of Question Diagramming • Read the question you are being asked. Then read it again. • Look at the number of points the question is worth. This tells you how many items you need in your answer. *short answer = 2 points (so you should have at least 2 items in your answer) *extended response = 4 points (so you should have at least 4 items in your answer)

  4. Steps continued… • Next, you need to read the first sentence. First, LOOK TO SEE IF THERE IS AN ACTION VERB THAT IS TELLING YOU AS THE WRITER TO DO SOMETHING. Action verbs in these questions are words like: 1. ORGANIZE 2. DESCRIBE 3. GIVE 4. EXPLAIN 5. LIST 6. SUPPORT 7. IDENTIFY

  5. Steps continued… • If there is an action verb, you need to PUT A BOX AROUND IT, AND UNDERLINE WHAT YOU ARE TO DO WITH THAT VERB. EXAMPLE: Short Answer Describe one way you can help keep the environment clean. Give a specific example from the text to support your answer.

  6. Steps continued… • If it is a question (ending with a question mark), then you just underline the question and circle the question mark. • If the sentence does not have any action verbs or is not a question, LEAVE IT ALONE. 7. Write the number of points you will receive at the beginning of each sentence. If the sentence asks for a specific number of whatever, circle the number.

  7. Steps continued… • When you begin your answer, MAKE SURE TO RESTATE ALL PARTS OF THE QUESTION. You do not get any points for restating, but it is more clear to the person scoring your test what you are trying to answer. 9. Make sure to answer in complete sentences. 10. When you are done, check your response with the question you have diagrammed to make sure you included all parts of the question. 11. You do the same process for extended response and short answer questions.

  8. Question Diagram Practice • Follow the steps for question diagramming. Then fully answer each question. Extended Response Describe two priorities of Alexander Shalom’s job as a public defender. Support your answer with a specific detail from the text.

  9. Question Diagram Practice Extended Response What is the main idea of this article? What is historical about Sonia Sotomayer becoming a Supreme Court Justice? Support your answer with two examples from the text.
