Important Things to Consider Before You Begin Your Job Search • Personal Awareness: Determine your skills and strengths. • What do you do best? • Types of work you like and dislike. • Working environments and physical conditions. Any physical limitations? • Know when you will be available for work. Days, nights, weekends?

  3. Specific Job Objective • Easier to focus on your job search when you have a clear idea of what type of work you are looking for. • Allows you to “sell” your key skills, abilities, education and experience to future employers.

  4. Knowing the Job Market • What companies would I like to work for? • Where are the potential jobs and how do I apply for them? • Where and who are the employers who have the potential to hire me? • Research the job market through: Newspapers Internet/Company websites Chamber of Commerce Local library Michigan Works!

  5. Job Search Strategies • Search for posted positions through: Classified/Help Wanted Ads Michigan Works! Michigan Talent Bank (MTB) Direct contact with company or company’s website • Check these sites daily as new jobs come out every day.

Networking • A process of contacting individuals who can help you in your job search by either suggesting job leads or referrals to other people who may know of job openings. • Develop a list of people you know (relatives, friends, neighbors, teachers, members of social/church groups, previous co-workers). • 75% of the employment opportunities are not posted. • Employers hire people they know personally or are referred to them by a trusted friend or colleague.

Networking Basics • When calling contacts, ask “Is it a good time to talk?” • Be polite and friendly, listen with interest. • Be clear about what type of work you are looking for. • Don’t ask for a job, ask if they know of any openings or anyone else you could contact. • Thank all contacts for their assistance by sending a thank you note. • May be asked to return the favor in the future.
