  2. Do Now • Discuss the questions from the case Study with your group: • Are you satisfied with the evidence that the ulcer was caused by an infectious agent? • Why or why not?

  3. The Ulcer • Helicobacter pylori was first discovered in the stomachs of patients with stomach ulcers in 1982 by Dr. Barry Marshall. Dr Barry Marsall Helicobacter pylori in the stomach wall.

  4. At the time people thought that no bacterium could live in the human stomach because of the high levels of acid. • Dr. Marshall’s breakthrough allowed him to culture the bacteria. • “…..they (Dr. Marshall) finally succeeded in visualizing colonies of growing the bacteria in 1982 when they unintentionally left their Petri dishes incubating for 5 days over the Easter weekend”. • After Dr. Marshall isolated Helicobacter pylori How do you think he demonstrated causation? (remember Koch’s postulates!!)

  5. Drink It! • Dr. Marshall drank a beaker of H. pylori culture. • He became ill with nausea and vomiting several days later. • Ten days later an endoscopy revealed gastritis and H. pylori. Had he proved causation? Why or why not?

  6. What’s up your nose? • Take a swab and see! • Get gloves, a tissue, and two sterile swabs. Put on the gloves and place the swabs on the tissue. • Get onemannitol+ salt agar plate andoneLB agar plate. • Use a Sharpie to write your name on the base of both plates.

  7. What’s up your nose? • Take one of the swabs and swab your left nostril. Streak the swab gently on the red mannitol + salt plate in a zigzag pattern. • Take care not to pierce the agar! • Dispose of the swab in the biohazard bag • Take the second swab and swab your right nostril. Streak the swab gently on the tan LB plate, as before. • Dispose of the second swab in the biohazard bag.
