A Nation Comes Apart Write - early 1800s the North & South had different economies due to environmental factors - Economic Differences: North – the rocky soil & cold climate meant farming could not be used as a main source of income Northern states - turn to industry with the invention of the steam engine & factory system

  3. Write - Advantages for Northern industry -Swift rivers provided power to run the mills and factories - natural harbors made foreign trade possible

  5. Southern Economy • tobacco, cotton, corn, rice, & indigo were the first cash crops for the South • The invention of the cotton gin allowed cotton to become the primary cash crop • Slavery was a key component for the success of large scale crop production.
