  3. The Land Earthquakes Mountains • Earthquakes are common in North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia • This is where 4 major plates comes together • Atlas Mountains • Caucasus Mountains • Kumz- dune-covered deserts

  4. Costal Plains, Seas, and Penninsulas Coastal Plains Seas/Penninsula • Along the Mediterranean sea, Caspian Sea, and Persian Gulf • Where most agricultural production takes place • Dead Sea, Caspian Sea, Aral Sea • Arabian Peninsula, Sinai Penninsuala, Persian Gulf

Water systems Rivers Streambeds • Nile • Worlds longest river • Alluvial soil- rich soil make up of sand and mud • Aswan High Dam- provides water and hydroelectric power • Tigris and Euphrates • Iraq • Provide hydroelectric power • Intermittent- appear suddenly and disappear just as quickly • Wadis- streambed that remains dry until a heavy rain

Natural Resources Oil and Natural Gasses Minerals • 60% of the earths known oil reserves • 50%of the earths known natural gas reserve • Economy does well when prices are high but when prices go down it hurts the economy • Turkmenistan- Sulfur, sulfate • Morocco- Phosphate- a chemical used in fertilizers • Gold, lead, manganese, chromium, and zinc

Climate Desert Climate Steppe Climate • Make 50% of the region • Sahara-largest desert in the world • Weather patterns in the desert tend to be extreme • Support some vegetation • Oasis- place in the desert where underground water surfaces • Largest climate region • Has short grasses providing pastures for sheep, goats, and camels • Pastoralism- the raising and grazing of livestock

  10. Mid-latitude Regions Exports Tourism • Mediterranean countries produce Citrus fruits, olives, grapes • People from colder climates come to the Mediterranean regions which has 360 days of sunshine/year

  11. Rainfall • Coastal and highland areas near mountain ranges usually receive the most rainfall. • Raise cereals- food grains such as barley, oats and wheat
