  3. Who is Francis Marion? • Born in 1732 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. • Parents: Gabriel and Esther Marion • At age 6 he moved to St.George. • At age 15 he suffered an accident that made him decide to stay in land.

  4. French-IndianWar and americanrevolution: • Joined a militia company in 1757. • Fought against the Cherokee Indians. • Returned home in 1761 and in 1773 he bought his own plantation (Pond Bluff). • In 1775 he was elected to be part of the South Carolina Provincial Congress. • Participated in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28, 1776.

  5. 1779: Siege of Savannah • March 1780: Francis sprained his ankle. • Marion formed a small unit (20-70 men).

  6. Marion’s men liberated 150 American prisoners. • General Lord Charles Cornwallis ordered the loyalist militia to capture Marion. • Colonel Tarleton gives Francis Marion the name of Swamp Fox. • Started working with Continental Commander Nathanael Greene.

  7. LaterLife: • Elected to the South Carolina state senate in 1781, 1782 and 1784. • Married Mary Esther Videau. • 1790: helped to write the South Carolina state constitution. • Marion died on February 27, 1795.

  9. FIGHTING TACTICS GUERRILLA WARFARE A type of warfare that uses ambush, the element of surprise, environmental advantages, and controlling the engagement. Cherokee Warfare Very similar to guerrilla warfare, can even be considered guerilla warfare, inspired Francis Marion`s fighting style.

  12. Battles Fought by Francis Marion

  13. Important Figures Lieutenant Banastre Tarleton: British lieutenant in charge of capturing Francis Marion. Nathanael Greene: A general for the Continental Army. He also used guerrilla warfare. General Charles Earl Cornwallis: One of the most formidable generals of England, he was defeated at the Battle of Yorktown.

  14. Small Skirmishes • Francis Marion resorts in guerrilla warfare. • Marion keeps harassing Loyalists and British troops through guerrilla warfare. • Marion’s Brigade: A militia group comprised of 150 men from different races. • Helps reconquer Charleston.

Battle of King’s Mountain, • Francis Marion’s troops focus in disrupting the communications, supplies, and raiding British troops. • Faces off with British Lieutenant Banastre Tarleton, who fails to capture Francis Marion. Battle of Black Mingo Creek Francis Marion v.s John C. Ball Francis Marion launches a surprise attack on John C. Ball’s forces; however, it fails. Marion’s troops succeed in defeating the British, who scatter.
