  1. Goals • Understand why you should be concerned with air pollution • Learn the important air quality challenges in the Mid-Atlantic US • Know where to find information about air quality in your community. • Know things you can do help to prevent air pollution

  2. Trends • Since 1990 new state and federal regulations have reduced emissions that cause Ozone - nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. • Ozone concentrations have improved • Weather influences ozone formation so ozone levels may be higher in some years than others. • Ozone remains a significant problem.

  3. Transport Question • How does wind speed affect air pollution?

  4. Long Range Transport • Most of the regions worse summertime air pollution occur when a large high pressure system brings in air laden with pollution from the industrialized Mid-West.

  5. Regional • Winds from the SW transport pollution from one city to another along the urban corridor. • I-95 Corridor – washington-baltimore-philadelphia-new york

  6. Local • Local stagnation accompanying winter high pressure system can produce a localize pollution episode. • Stagnate air can lead to a build up of air pollution.

  7. Technology Solutions • Energy efficiency • Less polluting chemicals • Add on controls • Process changes

  8. Solutions • Improving air quality requires reducing emissions. • Though not just power plants but also • vehicles, • Industries and businesses • everyday activities

  9. Both local and long range sources are important • Industrialized Mid-West • Urban traffic and sprawl areas • Local industries and businesses

  10. Solutions • Effective air pollution control requires public support • Car pool or use public transit • Consolidate trips and errands • Avoid prolong vehicle idling • Keep vehicles, lawn equipment, boats & other recreational vehicles well maintained • Refuel and mow in the evening • Avoid using charcoal lighter fluids • Run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads.
