  1. Throughout session 2014-15 all school members were involved in a Health and Wellbeing Self Evaluation Process. Parents were invited to get involved through attending a Learning Conversation or through completing an online survey. The parents communicated many positive aspects and points for improvement. These results are outlined on the following slides.

  2. SafeWhat parents thought Houston Primary School is doing well: • The parents felt that there were many procedures in place to ensure the children are safe at school. These included classroom assistants on the door in the morning, doors closed after 9, monitors to support early entry. • The parents commented that the children felt that the teachers knew them well. • The majority of parents felt that if a teacher had taught an older brother or sister then it allowed for a stronger relationship to be built. • Results from the parent audit when asked, My child is safe at school (consider procedures in place both in school and the playground): • Strongly Agree – 16 • Mostly Agree – 33 • Agree – 3 • Mostly Disagree – 0 • Strongly Disagree - 1

  3. SafeAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To review playground arrangements. Changes were introduced in June allowing P1-P3 parents to remain in the playground and P4-7 parents asked to meet their child/children out with the playground. Parents said: That at times there are too many adults in the playground and that is can be difficult to see/find children at the end of the day.

  4. SafeAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To review the policy on dogs. It is Renfrewshire Council Policy that no dogs should be allowed in the playground. This has been communicated through Term 1 newsletter. Parents said: That there are a high number of dogs in the playground and many children can be frightened.

HealthyWhat parents thought Houston Primary School is doing well: • The parents talked very positively about the PE curriculum stating that is was varied and the children enjoyed it. • All parents reported the input by Mr Milligan was very positive and that the children all really enjoyed his activities. • The extra curricular activities available were highly commended and the parents felt that even though there were a varied number at each stage that this was okay because the children would get their turn as they moved through the school. • In addition the activities provided by Active Schools was also highly commended. • The parents commented that the teachers were very approachable. • Pupil-teacher relationships varied from year to year . • Most parents were aware of Circle Time and felt it was a good method of communicating with children. • One parent commented that the free fruit was great and many agreed.   6. HealthyAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To ensure all children access 2 hours of PE per week. A performance calendar was introduced to ensure there is a balance of performances for all children. The mini gym has been reinstated to accommodate more PE lessons. Parents said: Children often missed PE in the run up to shows particularly at Christmas time.

  7. HealthyAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To communicate parents’ thought on the lunch menu to Environmental Services. The Grab and Go menu was discussed at a Parent Council meeting and the Parent Council Chair has communicated these at a Renfrewshire Meeting. Parents said: They were unhappy with the new Grab and Go lunch menu.

ActiveWhat parents thought Houston Primary School is doing well: • The parents were aware of active learning although their knowledge of what their child had experienced varied from parent to parent. • The parents were positive about active learning and felt this was an exciting way for their children to learn. • The parents talked positively about Accelerated Reading and the competitive nature motivated the children, particularly boys. • The parents were aware of some outdoor learning – using chalk for maths outside, local community visits, taking photos in playground. • The parents felt the playground was good and that the space was utilised well with age appropriate equipment.   9. ActiveAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To increase parental awareness of outdoor learning. Outdoor learning has been added to the School Improvement Plan to increase opportunities for outdoor learning. Parents have been invited to participate in the Eco group for vertical learning which is focussing on outdoor learning. Parents said: Their knowledge of outdoor learning was limited.

NurturingWhat parents thought Houston Primary School is doing well: • Parents felt that the teachers were very approachable and that the home-school communication was good. • The parents commented that notes in organisers, phone calls, letters were appropriate depending on the situation and the teacher. • The parents felt the timing of the parents’ night were good. • The parents were aware of reward systems in individual classes e.g. marbles, group points, tickets. • Results from the parent audit when asked, My child feels nurtured in school (consider pupil/teacher relationships, communication with school/home and recognition of achievements): • Strongly Agree – 19 • Mostly Agree – 26 • Agree – 10 • Mostly Disagree – 2 • Strongly Disagree - 0

  11. NurturingAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To issue the final reports earlier in the school year. The summative report will now be issued at the end of May. Parents said: The final summative reports were issued too late.

  12. NurturingAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To increase communication of children’s successes from P3- P7. This will be reviewed by all staff members at a staff training session and staff members will review good practice from others schools. Parents said: Communication of children’s achievements and successes reduced from P3 – P7.

AchievingWhat parents thought Houston Primary School is doing well: • The children were aware of some assessment strategies in place e.g. spelling tests, Big Maths Beat That Tests, Peer assessments. • They felt the setting for maths and language was a positive thing in enabling their child to perform to their best and for learning to be targeted. • Again Accelerated Reading was mentioned as a positive learning experience targeted at individual abilities. • The parents had limited awareness of Formative Assessment strategies although mentioned peer assessment as something they were familiar with. • Results from the parent audit when asked, My child is given opportunities to achieve their best (consider ways in which your child is directed in their learning, ways they are taught, how they are encouraged to improve and what motivates them): • Strongly Agree – 22 • Mostly Agree – 22 • Agree – 9 • Mostly Disagree – 4 • Strongly Disagree - 0

RespectedWhat parents thought Houston Primary School is doing well: • The parents recognised a number of ways in which the children are praised and rewarded. • The Star Awards and Roll of Honour were valued by parents and pupils. • The parents loved receiving notes home in organisers and in the post. • Text messages were highlighted as a particularly good method of communication. • Results from the parent audit when asked, My child is respected at school (consider how they are taught to respect and shown respect). • Strongly Agree – 22 • Mostly Agree – 24 • Agree – 9 • Mostly Disagree – 1 • Strongly Disagree - 0

  16. RespectedAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To make it easier for pupils to communicate their external achievements. P1-P3 pupils have been issued with stickers which parents can complete and stick in their organisers to share their external achievements. Teachers can then ensure they are included in the Roll of Honour. Parents said: That it was difficult for pupils in the infant stages to communicate their external achievements for the Roll of Honour.

ResponsibleWhat parents thought Houston Primary School is doing well: • The parents recognised that the children were given opportunities to take on additional responsibilities e.g. Pupil Council, Eco Committee, Nursery Ambassador, Class Monitor, Assembly Monitor. • The parents were also aware of classroom duties the children undertook taking responsibility for the smooth running of the classroom. • Results from the parent audit when asked, My child is encouraged to be responsible in school (consider ways in which your child takes responsibility for their possessions, learning, responsibilities within the classroom and wider responsibilities in the school): • Strongly Agree – 28 • Mostly Agree – 23 • Agree – 6 • Mostly Disagree – 0 • Strongly Disagree - 0

Formative assessment strategies will be used in homework tasks as well as termly targets in organisers to involve parents more in helping their children assess formatively. Parents said: They had some knowledge of Formative Assessment Strategies but this was limited.

  20. IncludedAreas parents were concerned about or felt improvements were needed. Our Pledge: To increase parental awareness of the Anti Bullying Policy and Procedures. Anti Bullying will be a focus of the vertical learning programme. The pupils will be involved in updating all policies and procedures. Pupils will create an anti bullying display. All outcomes will be communicated with parents via the school website. Parents said: They were unaware of the school Anti Bullying Policy and Procedures.
