  1. Solar Power Steve Smith Vivero de Las Casicas

  2. What • Solar Hot Water • Solar Electricity

  3. ‘O’ Level Physics • Volts • Amps • Watts = Volts * Amps • Frequency • AC • DC • Specific Gravity • Photovoltaic

  4. Once upon a time • There was once a poor, ignorant peasant farmer who wanted to buy a farm

  5. Once upon a time • So, believing the assurances of the government he bought one without mains electricity

  6. Once upon a time • So, believing the assurances of the government he bought one without mains electricity (which just goes to show how stupid and ignorant he was)

  7. Once upon a time • And so for 3 years he got through a series of generators and a lot of money to provide electricity for just a few hours a day (blowing up several washing machines and uncountable light bulbs on the way)

  8. Once upon a time • This made him a very sad, poorer peasant but perhaps a little less ignorant (at least about generators)

  9. Once upon a time • Then one day along came simple, inexpensive, solar power system

  10. Once upon a time • From one day to the next he had a bountiful supply of clean, free, electricity 24 hours a day

  11. Once upon a time • This made our simple peasant very, very happy, eventually a lot less poor, and with every expectation of living happily every after.

  12. Why • 320 days of sunshine per year • Ecologically friendly • Reliable • Clean • ‘Free’ energy • Increasingly cheaper to install • Low maintenance

  13. Why Not? • Building Licence for Panels • ‘High’ cost of installation • ‘High’ cost of upgrade • Space occupied • Noise

  14. Components of a Solar System

  15. Grid Tie System

  16. Hybrid System

  17. Electricity Usage Number of Panels Size of Battery Pack Capacity of Inverter/Charger Location and Aspect of Panels Security Sizing and Installation

  18. Electricity Usage Number of Panels Size of Battery Pack Capacity of Inverter/Charger Location and Aspect of Panels Security 5kw/day 3kw max 8 @ 250v DC 8 @ 6v / 400 amp DC 4kw AC/ 60 amp DC South South East / 37 degrees Sizing and Installation

  19. Back to ‘O’ Level Physics • Volts • Amps • Watts = Volts * Amps • Frequency • AC • DC • Specific Gravity • Photovoltaic

  21. The Future • Better Batteries • Grid Tie Feed-in • More sensitive Panels • More low wattage appliances

  22. Solar Power • Questions?
