  1. BUDDHISM

  2. BUDDHISM • Founded by Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) • Buddha was an Indian Prince who lived in luxury and comfort inside the palace. • One day he left the palace gardens and saw an Old man, a sick man, and a dead man.

  3. BUDDHISM • Buddha realized: Life is full of suffering. He became the Enlightened one • To end suffering a person must come to accept the world as it is and block out their own selfish desires • Philosophy: based on self denial and meditation. • Believe in reincarnation

  4. BUDDHISM • Four Noble Truths: • These truths explain life’s meaning. • Explain that pain and suffering is caused by human desire for material and wealth. • Only by giving up wrongful desires can a person find peace and harmony.

  5. BUDDHISM • The only cure for suffering is to follow the Eightfold Path, a middle road between a life devoted to pleasure and a life of harsh self-denial. • Have the right goals • Have the right perspective • Act in a worthy manner • Respect all living things • Meditate

  6. Cure for suffering You had to live a moral life, avoiding evil words and actions. Enlightenment is achieved through meditation. The ultimate goal is nirvana, a state of eternal peace and bliss.

  7. The Spread of Buddhism • Buddha attracted many followers • Many men and women who accepted his teachings set up monasteries for meditation and study. • Attracted many followers because it rejected the Caste System • Buddha’s death is clouded in legend
