Field Coaching- May 3 • Law • 15.4.5 Prohibited Contact and Payment of Free Kick A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player where they are satisfied that the Player has made Prohibited Contact with an opposition Player. A Player makes Prohibited Contact with an opposition Player if the Player: (a) makes contact with any part of their body with an opposition Player; (i) above the shoulders (including the top of the shoulders or bump to the head)

Field Coaching- May 3 • High Tackle • When applied • On all occasions including: • General play • Marking contests • Melee’s • Fend off • Process awareness • No set process- simple decision based on: • Did the player initiate/ cause/ contribute to the high contact or not • If player contributed to high contact (ducking etc) play on • If player didn’t contribute to high contact- free kick (and often presence required)

  6. Field Coaching- May 3 • Target Focus Area’s • Squaring up to contests • A must on all occasions • Handover • Need to continue to work in MZ from at least 45- 45m • Need to maintain control through zone if under contest- tap through • Keep EZ deep for goal line decisions

Field Coaching- May 3 • Target Focus Area’s • BTI • Must • Maintain vision on players by backing to boundary line • Run arc- Position to adjudicate Ruck contest • Get back inside of play • Adjust run arc regularly to get different views/ aspects of contest • Ensure you continue wide to ensure you get inside of play • Avoid Early Whistle • Let them play- do not blow whistle for stoppage too early • Players will attempt to release ball- hold whistle & communicate to players

  8. Field Coaching- May 3 • Target Focus Area’s • Work Rate/ Positioning • Mid zone intensity & rotate • Side on/ Inside play/ 3-ump set up • Process Decisions • Do you have a written process for all decisions? • Review/ Rehearse them? • Watched the DVD’s? • Read Law book?
