  2. A – Whistle blowing & flag throwing Drill: Trainer demonstrates flag down, slow whistle mechanic. Trainee T throws flag and moves 10-15 yards, then sounds whistle. Looking for: Throwing the flag high into air Yelling “Flag down” Gives dead-ball signal simultaneously with whistle Loudness of whistle blast. T then returns flag and puts whistle into bleach solution. Have trainees take turns as T. Rinse whistles after use. Rinse whistle Throw flag Blow whistle T Materials: 2 flags 2 whistles Tub with bleach solution Tub with rinse solution

  3. B – Relaying & reporting fouls Drill: Trainee T receives penalty call from trainer. Trainer should use a variety of personal and technical fouls. T must turn toward table area and repeat the signals. Looking for: Clear voice and big signals. Have trainees in group take turns as T. Materials: None required Receive penalty call T Trainer Relay penalty call

  4. Signaling – Personal / Technical Fouls Mix in crosse-check, illegal body check, and tripping Report Personal Report Technical “Slashing” “One minute” “Holding” “30 seconds” Turnover Foul Mix in pushing and interference Dead ball whistle “Loose ball” “Pushing” “Blue ball”

  5. C – Coach’s certification R U Drill: Trainer demonstrates certification to group, acting as R with a first trainee as U. Trainees R and U approach trainer (acting as coach) and perform certification. Looking for: Introduces self and partner Looks ‘coach’ in the eye Speaks clearly and confidently Reads through certification Gets captain and in-home numbers Confirms that coach’s team will have an adult, non-coach sideline manager Comments on field Asks if there are any questions States when captains will be called for coin toss U becomes R and R returns to group. Erase scorecards after use. Approach ‘coach’ Certify ‘coach’ Materials: 2 COC cards 2 scorecards 2 pencils 1 eraser

  6. Coach’s certification • Introduce yourself to the coach • Required question • “Are players properly equipped by rule?” • Required information • What are the numbers for your captain(s)? • What is the number of your in-home? • Tell coach how long until game starts.

  8. A – Crease situations & goal scored Drill: Trainer briefly review crease coverage, acting as L. Trainees G and A1 simulate crease play. Trainees L & T act as officials. Trainer tosses ball into goal, into crease or just outside crease. A1 may contest for loose ball. Mix it up. Looking for: L reacts with goal signal if ball enters net L sounds whistle for goalie interference or crease violation Bonus points for play on! T backs out toward table area when ball is loose T moves towards goal for score. T becomes L; L rinses whistle. New trainee rotates in as T. L Trainer G A1 T Rinse whistle Materials: 3 sticks 1 ball 2 whistles (L) Tubs with bleach & rinse

  9. B – Face off – where to go W Drill: Trainees A1 and A2 simulate a face off. Trainer sounds whistle & rolls ball either towards or away from F. A1 & A2 compete for ground ball. Looking for: F reacts to his goal if ‘towards’ F stays with scrum if ‘away’. W reacts to his goal if ‘away’ W stays with scrum if ‘towards’. Bonus points for signaling possession if it occurs. Rotate trainees through F & W and A1 & A2 positions. Materials: 2 sticks 1 ball 1 whistle (trainer’s own) Trainer F A2 A1

  10. C – Face off procedure Drill: Trainer demonstrates face off mechanic as F, using end line as midline. First trainee acts as initial W. Trainees A1 and A2 simulate a face off. Trainees F & W act as officials. Looking for: Correct positioning Hold signal by W, then point “Down” Check player positioning Back up “Set!” (loud enough for f/o guys only) No movement after “Set!” Quick whistle after “Set!” Backing out to proper side W becomes F; F rinses his whistle and returns to group. Rotate another trainee in as W. W Materials: 2 sticks 1 ball 2 whistles Tub with bleach solution Tub with rinse solution Rinse whistle F A2 X A1

Face-off Procedure • Player: • crosses centered on ball • crosses vertical & parallel • crosses up to, not touching line • empty neutral zone • hands around handle & on ground • right hand away from plastic • motionless from “Set” to whistle Neutral Zone O2 Official • Official: • “Down” • “Set” • “Whistle” • Determine possession X1

Field Session #3 GROUPS A, B & C ROTATE CLOCKWISE AT 15 MINUTE INTERVALS If players are available for a scrimmage, then trainers will shadow trainees & trainees will rotate in / out as officials on either side of the field. Trainees active as ‘officials’ need a whistle and a flag. Trainees not active as ‘officials’ should shadow the play and ask questions. Trainers should focus on trainees’ positioning and calls (OB, fouls, etc.) A C Transition situation Settled situation B Out of bounds

Trainees A1 and A2 move around attack area, passing the ball back and forth. Two trainees as Lead and Trail. Looking for: L must react up and down GLE. L & T calling out when On and Off. On watching player with ball & bubble Off must watch the passer until the pass is complete. Calling fouls, if any Rotate trainees through L and T positions. Have them take turns as field players A1, A2, B1, B2 and G T A1 B1 G Trainer B2 L A2 Materials: 2-5 sticks 1 ball

  14. B – Out of bounds Drill: Position 2 trainees as Lead and Trail. Trainees A1 and B2 with sticks to “contest” for a ground ball. T sound whistle and signal – when ball rolled across sideline. L echoes signals for possession and horn. L sound whistle and signal – when ball rolled across end line. T echoes signal for possession. Looking for: L & T watch play Calls fouls, if any Blows whistle when ball is OOB Gives dead-ball signal simultaneously with whistle Points direction of play Both hands up for sideline OOB Partner echoes direction & sideline signal T becomes L; L returns whistle. Have other trainees rotate into T position and take turns as A1 / B2. Materials: 2 sticks 1 ball 2 whistles Tub with bleach solution Tub with rinse solution L A1 B2 T Rinse whistle Trainer

  16. C – Transition situation Drill: Trainer briefly review key places for Lead and Trail. Trainee A1 ’shoots’ and G makes the save and passes to B2. Looking for: Lead on GLE prior to ‘shot’ and moving backward into alley and staying with ball. Trail at corner of attack box prior to ‘shot’ and hustling to midline to cover the outlet pass. Bonus points for looking back to clearing pass. Rotate trainees through L and T positions. Have trainees take turns as players A1, B2 and G. T L Trainer A1 G B2 Materials: 3 sticks 1 ball T L
