  3. Welcome to Say Cheese… During this lessons we will be exploring… Before we start, let’s recap what we learnt during our last lesson… • First camera ever Image: http://www.freepik.com/free-vector/old-film-negatives-vector-material-5_514767.htm http://www.sodahead.com/fun/pet-mice-cute-or-ick/question-1763939/?page=4&link=ibaf&q=mice+standing+up&imgurl=http://www.petsworld.co.uk/images/rat.jpg

  4. can also be reflected, refracted and bent through different mediums and materials In our last lesson we learnt that “light…” • travels in a straight line • can help keep us warm, help grow plants and provide power through solar panels

  5. Let’s start this lesson by exploring “First camera ever”. Image: http://kentonbrede.com/2012/04/08/camera-obscura-and-bedroom/

  6. These early scientists and philosophers discovered that light travels in a straight line. What was amazing is that they could visually show how this works through a device which we know today as a ‘camera’. Many years ago early scientists and philosophers came across a unique and amazing discovery that would change how we see the world.

  7. This discovery and technique would later be developed into the world’s first camera, known as the ‘camera obscura’. The light would travel from outside through the hole and naturally create an image on the inside. Early scientists and photographers could show how light travels by directing light through a small hole… The hole directed light inside and on to the opposite wall Early camera obscuras were made by first creating a dark room, making sure no light could shine through They then made one very small hole in the wall looking outside towards a tree The reason the tree appears upside down is because, as we learnt earlier, light travels in a straight line The light from the top of the tree travelled downwards into the hole and light from the bottom travelled upwards making the tree appear upside down The unique part happened when the light shining through the hole projected an upside down image of the tree outside Image: http://www.alltopmovies.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/ProfessorFrink2.JPG

  8. More and more people learned of the camera obscura technique and began using it for different reasons… Many artists started using the camera obscura because they could trace over the projected image and create an accurate and realistic drawing or painting. 9. Over time the camera obscura got smaller and smaller. This meant artists could travel from place to place creating realistic paintings or drawings of different landscapes and people. 10. People around the world have learnt how a camera obscura works and have transformed their homes into large camera obscuras. Lets take a look at a few examples… Today there are buildings around the world that are designed and made to work like camera obscuras. These particular buildings give visitors an opportunity to experience what it is like to be inside a camera obscura and to witness how it all works. 14. As we have seen, light can help create some amazing things… Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far…

  15. far? so we learnt have What Light • travels in a straight line. We can see how this works through a camera obscura. • can be used to project an image of the outside environment. This would later become known as the camera obscura, considered the first camera in the world. • is needed for a camera obscura to work. Many artists use this to help create realistic drawings and paintings.

  16. In the next lesson we will explore “Cameras and History”. End of lesson
