  2. Great Depression • 1929 until U.S. Joined WWII in 1942 • Stock Market Crash of 1929 • 25% Unemployment in 1933 • Prices of Farm goods fell 50% • 9,000 Banks closed from 1930 to 1933

  3. WPA –Works Progress Administration • Program in FDR’s New Deal • Goal – Employ out of work Americans • Initially designed to improve America’s Infrastructure • Funded programs to help American’s lives

  4. WPA’s Birth • WPA was created in 1935 • Initially Funded with $4.88 Billion dollars • Employed 8.5 million workers • Workers paid $15 to $90 a month • ½ workers employed in NYC

  5. Accomplishments of WPA • Paved 651,000 miles of road • Built 78,000 bridges • Built 8,000 parks • Healthcare awareness • Slum clearance, reforestation, and rural rehabilitation

  6. Types of WPA Posters • WPA employed out of work artists • Created a series of posters • Posters publicized programs and educated Americans • Promoted plays and musicals

  7. Public Health Improvements • Community sewage efforts and fighting disease • Eradicating Syphilis • Getting eye examinations • Proper handling of dairy products • Improve infant mortality rates

  8. Educational Programs • Free trade and technical job classes • Learn to speak and read English • Heath awareness • Promoting reading books • Promoting the Arts
