  2. Chalk Boards vs. Projectors Chalk Boards Projectors Projectors began to be widely used in schools in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Teaching materials can be preprinted on transparencies, which can be written on and reused. Today projectors are slowly being replaced by computer projection systems, interactive whiteboards, etc. due to technology advancement in society. • Framed with wood to keep from breaking, and marked on with shards of slate • Used in the 19th century to save paper • In the 1990s potential health risks posed by chalk dust prompted the replacement of many blackboards with whiteboards
