  1. SDZ Construction:Aviation Rocketry Inter-service Resident Range Safety Course (Intermediate)

  2. The 2.75 FFAR (Folding Fin Aircraft Rocket) has an air-to-ground role and is fired from fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Its fuzing and warhead performance characteristics make it suitable for low-speed aircraft. August 2003

  3. AH-64 Apache Helicopter August 2003

  4. August 2003

  5. August 2003

  6. Legend for Aviation Gunnery (Rockets) August 2003

  7. Constructing the SDZ • Construct an SDZ for the 2.75 FFAR rocket with a MK66 motor fired into steel from an aircraft with a pitch -5° and launcher quadrant elevation of 95 mils. • Dimensions of the SDZ parameters for this weapon system are given in Chapter 13, pages 13-5 and 13-6. August 2003

  8. Constructing the SDZ • For aerial rockets, the launch angle in degrees, equals launcher QE in mils divided by 17.7 plus the aircraft pitch in degrees. • For articulating launchers, use the maximum articulated QE possible plus the aircraft pitch in degrees. August 2003

  9. Launcher QE (in mils) 17.7 Launcher QE = 95 mils 17.7 Launch Angle is computed as follows: Launch angle (in degrees) = + Aircraft Pitch (in degrees) = 5.36° (ˆ6°) Launch angle = 2° 6° - 5° = 1° (ˆ2°) August 2003

  10. Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • Plot the target. • Locate the Start-Fire Safe-Arm Line. • Locate the Cease-Fire Disarm Line. • Establish the right and left lateral limits. August 2003

  11. Cease-Fire Disarm Line 5° 5° 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • From Table 13-1, find Distance X as measured from the cease-fire disarm line. • Distance X = 4500m Distance X • Annotate Distance X on the legend. • At the start-fire line, measure 5° with a protractor from the left and right lateral limits to establish the Dispersion Area. August 2003

  12. Distance X Dispersion Area 5° 5° Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • Draw tic marks as shown. • To establish the Dispersion Area, draw a straight line from the firing position through each tic mark out through Distance X. • This completes the Dispersion Area. August 2003

  13. Distance X Dispersion Area 10° 10° Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • At the start-fire line, measure 10° with a protractor from the left and right limits of the firing line to establish the Ricochet Area. • Draw tic marks as shown. • To establish the Ricochet Area, draw a straight line from the firing position through each tic mark out through Distance X. August 2003

  14. Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area 10° 10° Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • This completes the Ricochet Area. • At the left limit of the start-fire line, scribe an arc between the left limit of the Ricochet Area and the left lateral limit. Use Distance X as the radius. Do the same on the right side. August 2003

  15. Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • At Distance X, draw a straight line between the right and left limits of the start-fire line. • Erase any unnecessary lines. August 2003

  16. Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • At Distance X, draw a straight line between the right and left limits of the start-fire line. • Erase any unnecessary lines. • The measurement for Area A = 300m. • Lightly draw lines perpendicular to the limits of the Ricochet Area. August 2003

  17. Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • Draw tic marks at the measurement for Area A. • Draw straight lines parallel to the limits of the Ricochet Area through the tic marks just drawn. August 2003

  18. Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area 25° 25° Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • At the firing position, measure 25° with a protractor from the left and right limits of the Ricochet Area to establish the Area A. • Draw tic marks. August 2003

  19. Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area 25° 25° Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • From the start-fire, draw straight lines through the tic marks just drawn. • The measurement for Area B = 300m • Lightly draw lines that extend the firing lines from Distance X by the measurement for Area B. August 2003

  20. Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area 25° 25° Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • From the right and left limits of the firing line, scribe an arc from the right and left limits of Area A using the measurement for Area B as the radius. • At the measure-ment for Area B, connect the right and left limits of the firing lines with a straight line. August 2003

  21. Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area 25° 25° Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • This completes Areas A and B. August 2003

  22. Area B Area A Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line • This completes Areas A and B. • Annotate Areas A and B on the legend. • To complete this portion of the SDZ, erase all unnecessary lines. August 2003

  23. Area B Area A Distance X Ricochet Area Dispersion Area Cease-Fire Disarm Line 1000m Start-FireSafe-Arm Line Maneuver- Holding Area 60° • This completes Areas A and B. • Annotate Areas A and B on the legend. • To complete this portion of the SDZ, erase all unnecessary lines. • This SDZ has a Maneuver-Holding Area which will now be shown in detail. August 2003

  24. 60° 60° 1km • In this illustration, the Maneuver- Holding Area extends 1km behind the start-fire line. This distance is variable. • Extend the firing lines back the distance of the Maneuver-Holding area. • At the firing lines, measure back 60°. August 2003

  25. 60° 60° • Draw tic marks. • Draw straight lines through the tic marks. 1km August 2003

  26. 60° 60° 1km • From the firing line, draw arcs out to the limits of the Maneuver-Holding Area. • Close the area as shown. • This completes the Maneuver-Holding Area. • Erase any unnecessary lines. August 2003
