  1. May is … Health Ministry Department SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH

  2. What happens when we sleep? • Our brain goes into recharge mode • Our cells repair themselves • Our body releases vital hormones “Give yourself proper time to sleep. They who sleep give nature time to repair the waste of the organism.” MM p.80

  3. What is the impact of just one night of deprived sleep? Healthy subjects were studied once after a night of normal sleep (8.5 hr.) and once after a night of 4 hr. sleep. “A single night of partial sleep deprivation induces insulin resistance.”

  4. Can a lack of sleep affect even my genes? Insufficient sleep (< 6 hr. a night) affects the activity of over 700 of our genes. The genes affected were associated with controlling our response to stress!

  5. How does the body prepares us for sleep? The pineal gland produces a relaxing hormone called melatonin. The onset starts about 9:00p and stops around 7:30a

  6. What are some biblical keys for good sleep? • Putting our trust in God: “I will lie down and • sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make • me dwell in safety.” Ps. 4:8 • Thoughts of benevolence: “I will refresh the • weary and satisfy the faint. At this I awoke • and looked around. My sleep had been • pleasant to me.” Jer. 31:25,26

  7. What’s one way to have refreshing sleep? “ Those who have not a free circulation of air in their sleeping rooms through the night, generally awake feeling exhausted.” “A good respiration of air soothes the nerves and induces sound, refreshing sleep.” SM II p.462, MH p.272

  8. What’s another way to enjoy our rest? Sleep is often disturbed when eating before bedtime. Therefore, in the morning we awake unrefreshed. “When we lie down, the stomach should have Its work done, (> 4 hrs.) that we may enjoy rest.” MH p.303
