In 1849, gold was discovered in California, which at the time has 14,000 people. Dreams of striking it rich caused thousands to head west. Few found gold. Most struggled to survive. In 1855, the Gold Rush was over. Many moved on in search of new gold fields. But, by that time, California had almost half a million people. And, it had become the 31st state.

In 1947, Branch Rickey asked Jackie Robinson if he had the guts to play professional baseball. As the first black player, it would not be easy, but Robinson promised to try his best. Pitchers hurled balls at him. Players called him names. People sent him death threats. But Robinson stood by his promise, and Rickey stood by Robinson. Together, they changed baseball forever.

Mutts are often free, where purebreds can cost thousands. Also, mutts might not be as handsome as purebreds, but they’re less likely to be nervous or snappy, and best of all, a mutt doesn’t have a million copies of itself running around. A poodle is a poodle, but a mutt is one of a kind.

They live in the desert, where they stay in burrows during the day and hunt at night. Jerboas get their liquids from their food, so they never drink water. Jerboas are no bigger than guinea pigs, but they can hop faster than a person can run.
