  4. FREQUENCY TABLE • A frequency table lists each item in a data set with the number of times the item occurs. confidential

  5. Example to draw a frequency table Read the following passage: Photosynthesis is a process by which the green plants synthesize organic matter in the presence of light with the help of chlorophyll. During photosynthesize light is converted into chemical energy. Make a frequency table showing the number of times each vowel occurs in the paragraph. confidential

  6. Frequency Table confidential

  7. NOW YOUR TURN!!! • Marks of 30 students in a test given below. Prepare a frequency table taking each score as one item. 7, 6, 3, 5, 4, 0, 1, 2, 5, 3, 4, 7, 3, 1, 0, 2, 5, 6, 7, 2, 3, 4, 6, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 confidential

  9. Line Graph • A line graph shows how an amount changes over time. confidential

  10. Example • Make a line graph for the following data given below: confidential

  11. Answer confidential

  12. The following are number of vowels in a particular passage: make a line graph Now your turn confidential

  13. Answer confidential

  14. BREAK confidential

  15. Bar graphs • A bar graph is used to compare amounts. A key identifies data that are compared. confidential

  16. Example • The following are the maximum temperature recorded at a place for thirty days Draw a bar graph. confidential

  17. Answer confidential

  18. Now your turn • The following table shows the number of children in families. Draw a bar graph. confidential

  19. ANSWER confidential

  20. Circle graphs • A circle graph compares parts to a whole. confidential

  21. Example • Use the data in the table to make a circle graph. confidential

  22. Now do it by yourself • Construct a pie-graph for the following distributions confidential

  23. ANSWER confidential

  24. Stem-and-Leaf Plot • A stem-and-leaf plot orders data and lets you see the values and frequencies confidential

  25. Example ANSWER • Make a stem-and-leaf plot of the data: 507, 301, 479, 367, 543, 388, 512, 479, 483, 379, 548, 341, 399, 465 3 01 41 67 79 88 99 4 65 79 79 83 5 07 12 43 48 Key: 4|65 means 465 confidential

  26. DO THIS NOW • Make a stem and leaf plot for the respective weights of a particular group. 35,56,45, 67,23,33, 43,37,40, 52, 25, 44, 42, 27, 36 WEIGHTS KEY: 2|3 MEANS 23 2 3 4 5 6 • 5 7 • 3 5 6 7 • 0 2 3 4 5 • 6 • 7 confidential

  28. Mean, Median, Mode and Range • The mean of a set of data is the sum of the values divided by the number of data items. • The median is the middle value when data is arranged in numerical order. • The mode is the value or item that appears most often. • Range is the difference between the smallest and greatest value. confidential

  29. Exercise • Find the mean, median and mode and range of 34, 49, 63, 43, 50, 50, 26, • Mean = 34+49+63+43+50+50+26 7 = 45 Median = middle value (26, 34, 43, 49, 50, 50, 63) = 49 Mode = 50 Range = 63 – 26 = 37 confidential

  30. Practice Problems • Find the mean, median and mode and range of 3, 7, 1, 9, 9, 5, 8, 6, 7, 9 • MEAN = 3+7+1+9+9+5+8+6+7+9 10 = 6.4 MEDIAN = 7 MODE = 9 confidential

  31. Revision Questions • What is the mean of 36, 32, 55, 81, 31, 35? • 45 • What is the median of the above data? • 35.5 • What is the mode of 3,4,5,6,3,3,2,3,4,4,5,6,7? • MODE =3 • Prepare a frequency table for the following data. 25, 23, 25, 26,23, 25, 24, 29, 28, 27, 29, 24, 24, 24, 25, 26, 23, 23, 28, 30 confidential
