  2. Full power is on the King or Queen. • No political party and no elections. The country is governed by a king or the royal family. • Most of the world’s monarchies are constitutional monarchies, in which the reigning member of the royal family is the symbolic head of state but elected officials actually do the governing.

  3. Contemporary constitutional monarchies include Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Belize, Cambodia, Canada, Denmark, Japan, Jordan, Liechtenstein, Lesotho, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

  4. Constitutional monarchy • Constitutional monarchy occurred in continental Europe after the French revolution. • General Napoleon Bonaparte is considered the first monarch proclaiming himself as embodiment of the nation, rather than as a divinely-appointed ruler; this interpretation of monarchy is basic to continental constitutional monarchies.

  5. Originally, a constitutional monarch was quite a powerful figure, head of the executive branch even though his or her power was limited by the constitution and the elected parliament. • The present concept of constitutional monarchy is developed in the United Kingdom. The prime minister becomes people who exercises power and the monarchs content themselves with the titular position.

  6. The most significant family of constitutional monarchies in the world today are the sixteen Commonwealth realms under Elizabeth II. • In Thailand's constitutional monarchy, the monarch is recognized as the Head of State, Head of the Armed Forces, Upholder of the Buddhist Religion, and Defender of the Faith.

  7. Absolute monarchy • Absolute monarchy is a government where the monarch exercises ultimate governing authority. • The monarch has power over the land and its people. • In an absolute monarchy, the monarch is not legally bound or restricted by a constitution.

  8. Among the few nations where the monarch still claims full power (as head of both state and government) are Brunei, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Swaziland, and Vatican City. In Tonga the king has majority control of the parliament.
