The First. Dr. Guion S. Bluford Jr. was the first African American to be sent in space. He became a NASA astronaut on August 30, 1979. He has flown in space four times, all on different space crafts with different missions. The crafts that Bluford has flown on include STS-8, STS-61A, STS-39, and STS
