Chapter 6 Learning Objectives • Students will be able to explain and demonstrate the correct action a defensive driver would take when given a variety of situations that require driver action. • Students will be able to demonstrate acquired knowledge of chapter 3 and 4 through scoring well on a written quiz.

  4. Effects of Alcohol… Activity: In your groups, create a list of all the ways alcohol can affect a driver…write it down.

  5. Effects of Alcohol… Driving under the influence: -Impairs judgment -Impairs senses -Slows reaction time -Impairs coordination -Impairs balance -Impairs vision -Impairs ability to judge distance What are some methods to sober up? Time…is the only method

  6. How does alcohol effect the body? In Summary, what is BAC? Blood Alcohol Concentration, or the amount of alcohol in your blood What 4 factors determine BAC? -Quantity of alcohol consumed -Body Weight/Gender -The amount of time in which the drinks were consumed -If there was any food in your system

  7. Are all drinks created equal? Which drink contains the most alcohol? OR OR 1.5 oz. liquor 12 oz. beer 5 oz. wine They all contain the same amount… Question: Studies have shown that most traffic accidents occur from which type of drink? BEER

  8. What are the laws in NJ? If you are over 21: -It is ILLEGAL to drive with a BAC of .08 or higher (.08 is equal to about 4 drinks for an 175 lb male) If you are under 21: -It is ILLEGAL to drive with a BAC of .01 or higher (.01 would account for medicines, mouthwash, etc) The more you drink, the greater your chances of causing an accident are… At a BAC of .05, the risk of causing an accident… Doubles At a BAC of .10, the risk of causing an accident is… 6 times as great At a BAC of .15, the risk of causing an accident is… 25 times as great

  9. How do the Police test BAC? Breathalyzer Test, which determines the BAC based on the amount of alcohol on a driver’s breath. Can I refuse the Breathalyzer test? Refusal to take the test is equal to a BAC of .10 for the first offense… This penalty is so severe based on the Implied Consent Law.

  10. Implied Consent Law… States that if you drive on NJ roadways, you agree to submit to a breath test given by police or hospital staff following an arrest for drinking and driving. If you refuse to take the breath test after such an arrest, the driver will be detained and brought to a hospital where the staff may draw blood to determine BAC. Refusal will also result in the driver blowing the equivalent BAC of? .10

The Good Host Law… Be a good host: -Always provide food and non-alcoholic drinks at your party -Never insist on refills or force drinks onto guests The Good Host Law Requires: -If a party guest drinks too much, you can not let them drive -If a guest leaves your party and gets into a drinking and driving accident, you may become involved in a lawsuit.

  12. Drinking and Driving… Activity:In your groups, create a list of all the signs you can think of that a driver who has been drinking would display while driving. Signs a driver has been drinking: -Speeding -Weaving (within their lane) -Slow Driving -Jerking Motion (erratic speed) -Quick Stops (sudden stops) What could you do to avoid a driver who appears to be drunk?

  13. Designated Drivers… Who knows what a designated is? A “DD” is responsible for the safe transportation of friends or family members who have been drinking. Activity: In your groups, come up with a strategy to talk a friend who has been drinking out of driving. If you have been drinking, what options to avoid drinking and driving do you have? (Answer Both)

  16. Drugs and Driving… After alcohol, marijuana is the most common drug associated with collisions. Never take any drug and drive. True or False: Over-the-counter drugs affect basic driving skills? True! Cold Pills, Tranquilizers, and Prescription Medication all affect basic driving skills.
