George Bush • Bush was born in New Haven, CT • Moved to Texas because his father was getting involved in the oil industry • Attended Phillips Academy in Andover • Attended Yale to continue family tradition • Later attended Harvard to get his M.B.A • Joined Texas National Guard and flew airplanes for 4 years • Returned to Texas to start oil company

George Bush • Ran for House of Reps in 1978 but lost to a democrat • Became owner of the Texas Rangers • 1994 ran against Ann Richards for governor of Texas • Richards said Bush was a political lightweight and was privileged • Won office; began connections with democrats by using common sense and compromise • In 1999 decided to run for president; up against McCain who claimed Bush to be inexperienced—especially in foreign affairs • To win nomination, he changed his image and incorporated democratic themes

Bush as president • Won presidency against Al Gore • First president since 1876 to win the White House while losing national popular vote • The people were doubtful of Bush because of such a close win for president • At first he was able to successfully pass an education reform bill, negotiate trade agreements, and settle the Chinese/American jet accident • Bush’s popularity declined when he decided to go in to Iraq and take out Saddam Hussein
