  1. Effects of a Thermonuclear Blast

  2. Electro Magnetic Pulse • A strong surge of energy • Any electrical appliance, particularly with a computer chip, will be fried • This will happen a split second after the blast • It will not be noticed by people, except that appliances will stop to function

  3. 2. Fireball • A huge ball of fire is produced • The size of the fireball will depend on the size of the nuclear weapon • The fireball is hotter than the surface of the sun. • It will instantly vaporize anything in its radius. • It will appear to be instantaneous.

  4. 2. Fireball (continued) • Anyone looking directly at the fireball will be blinded, temporarily or permanently • Many people outside the radius of the fireball will be severely burned. • Many fires will be set (plants, buildings). • Bear in mind that there would be hundreds of thousands of burn victims; in the USA today there are 1,800 beds in burn wards

  5. 3. Blast • An immense blast wave is produced • It will travel outwards in a increasingly wide circle. • Severe damage will be sustained by most structures closest to the blast • Most houses in the blast radius will be uninhabitable. • Many people will die of blast injuries.

  6. Video of a Nuclear Blast • http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=4235947

  7. 4. Radioactive Fallout • Debris from the blast is sucked back towards the blast centre (“ground zero”). • It is thrown upwards and forms the characteristic mushroom clouds. • In this clouds, radiation from the uranium or plutonium mixes with the debris • This debris falls back to earth • Radiation is invisible and cannot be felt.

  8. 4. Radiation (continued) • Radiation affects people at the cellular level • It can cause cancer • It can causes birth defects • The wind blows the radioactive fallout far from the blast centre.

  9. Radioactive Fallout (cont’d) It can cause the same sicknesses and death in people even thousands of miles away. Radiation takes hundreds of years to become harmless.
