  2. We often experience stress from different parts of our lives • School • Home • Extracurricular activities • Job • Friends • Global issues such as the economy, war, etc.

  3. Is stress always a bad thing? • It is healthy to have a small amount of stress in our lives. • Healthy levels of stress help to “keep us on our toes” and to stay on top of our responsibilities. • However, it is very important that we manage the amount of stress in our lives.

  4. Take a look at this list a write down or make a mental note of the things that cause you stress • Worry about the world and its current status • Fear of getting hurt by others (emotionally or physically) • Too much responsibility • Fear of failing • School • New friends • Jealous of brothers and sisters • Conditions at home (too dirty, messy, too hot, too cold, too poor . . .) • Not enough food • A friend or relative recently moved away • Parents separated or divorced • I don’t fit in • I have a drug or drinking problem • Too many responsibilities at home • Too many decisions at home • I am not popular • I get nervous when I try new things • Someone I care about is in trouble • There is a new child in the family • Worrying about someone at home • Attending church • I get embarrassed easily • I don’t like the way I look • Friends put pressure on me to do • things I don’t want to do • I get nervous with members of the • opposite sex

Managing our stress • We can’t control ALL of the stressors in our lives • When managing our stress levels, it is important to focus on the things that are in our control rather than worrying about the things that are beyond our control. • There are thing that we can do manage our stress levels…

Tips for managing stress • Exercise daily • Set goals and prioritize your activities • You may need to weed out things that are taking up time and causing unneeded stress • Talk to someone about what is going on in your life • Friend, counselor, parent, teacher, sibling, etc. • Get plenty of sleep • This is something that we take for granted. A lack of sleep can take a toll on us in ways that we are not aware

Tips continued • Plan your time • Knowing what you need to do and when you will do it will alleviate some stress • Schedule time to relax or have fun (not too much) • Don’t put too much pressure on yourself • Realize that you can’t do it all and remember that noone is perfect • Understand that experiencing stress at your age is normal • You are not in this alone. Many of your friends and classmates might be having similar experiences • Avoid too many changes or having to make too many decisions (at all possible) at one time

  9. Wrap up • Think about the things that we talked about that can help you to manage your stress levels. • Remember to try not to worry about that things in your life that are beyond your control, but to address the things that are causing stress that you are able to change. • Any Questions?
