  1. ITU Workshop on “Service Delivery Platforms (SDP) for Telecommunication Ecosystems: from today’s realities to requirements and challenges of the future”(Geneva, Switzerland, 17 October 2011 ) IEEE Next Generation Service Overlay Network – P 1903 (NGSON) Mehmet Ulema, Manhattan College, NY USA Consultant to Huawei

  2. Outline Technical overview of NGSON NGSON timeline and status Challenges Summary

  3. Motivation for NGSON? • Exponentially increasing number of services and applications and their interactions • To have a better, more efficient way of providing these services and applications by means of context-aware, dynamically adaptive, and self-organizing networking capabilities.

  4. What is NGSON? • An IEEE sponsored effort to standardize a framework of IP-based service overlay networks • A set of context-aware, dynamically adaptive, and self-organizing networking capabilities, including advanced routing and forwarding schemes • Independent of underlying transport networks.

  5. NGSON Framework Diagram Application and Contents Service Addressing, Discovery Service interaction facilitation functions Security/Trust Context-aware, dynamically adaptive and self organizing networking capabilities Dynamic policy enforcement capabilities (eg. QoS, registration derived, etc) Context Aware Routing NGSON Underlying Transport Networks
