What’s Wrong with Punitive Writing? • It instills a dislike, perhaps even a hatred, for writing. • Because the writing teacher then has to overcome these negative attitudes, the task of the writing teacher is made much more difficult. • It has no value as writing instruction. • It’s doubtful if it changes the offensive behavior NCTE-S.   3. What If I Want A Student to Write His/Her Side of An Issue?That’s genuine communication and not punitive writing. It has the basic elements: a sender who wants to say something, a reader who wants to learn something, and a message that deserves to be heard. NCTE-S. Brewer
