  1. Outline • Update on recent CCSM organizational actions • Recent North Atlantic results (Matthew) • Update on global 0.1º model on ES (Nori) • Discussion of next steps

  2. High Resolution Ocean Modeling in CCSM “Kyosei Consortium” CRIEPI/NCAR/LANL/Kyushu Global 0.1º CCSM Ocean Component LANL/NCAR North Atlantic 0.1º Basin Simulations NPS/LANL Global 0.1º Navy Prediction System

  3. Some Relevant CCSM Organizational Issues • High resolution ocean modeling incorporated into CCSM science plan • SSC now endorses use of the Earth Simulator for CCSM science • Call for formation of “ES Science Team” to coordinate use of ES resource with CCSM working groups • Software engineering effort to port full CCSM system to ES nearly complete (currently running “climate equivalence” test)

  4. Next Steps • Goal: Configure eddy-resolving ocean component for fully coupled system experiments beginning in late-2004 / early-2005. • Analyze the results (~500 Gbytes per simulated year)! • Annual statistics for nearly all runs now on NCAR MSS in netCDF format • Small number of additional sensitivity studies ? (topography, closure, bottom boundary layer, forcing, ...) • Transition to tripole grid and POP-2

  5. How Does It Compare? ES ~ 3.5 – 4.5 years/day ~ 15x IBM P4 ~ 0.25 years/day Jones, P.W., P.H. Worley, Y. Yoshida, J.B. White and J. Levesque. Practical performance portability in the Parallel Ocean Program (POP). Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience. (in press). 2003
