  7. Communication Messages? Attendance changes go to our Attendance Secretary. mhattendance@issaquah.wednet.edu Write a note for changes to routines and have your child give it to me in the morning! Please write down the bus number if your child needs a bus pass! Concerns? Questions? Email your homeroom teacher.

  9. Study Skills/Grades • Organization of desk and notebooks/journals • Planner - Daily, weekly, long term assignments • Time management • All assignments are recorded in my gradebook. You should see graded assignments/homework coming home weekly. • Preparation of students towards greater independence for middle school

Reading Experiences • Balanced literacy instruction in Reading- • Whole-Class Lessons: teaches skills needed to be successful 5th grade readers • Shared reading: builds community and communication skills • Guided reading: teaches specific skills to targeted group of students • Independent reading: addresses individual tastes and reading levels and promotes being a lifelong reader! • Reader’s workshop- Fiction/Non-Fiction teaching of comprehension strategies aligned with Common Core • Scholastic News-current events Magazine with skill practice

Writing: Lucy Calkins – Units of Study Balanced literacy instruction in Writing- • Whole-Class Lessons: teaches skills needed to be successful 5th grade writers • Small groups: teaches specific skills to targeted group of students • Independent reading: addresses individual writing needs and assists students’ in meeting all requirements on the unit checklist Genres addressed: • Journalism • Poetry • Narrative • Persuasive-Argument • Informative-Research Report • Fantasy

Clever • Access several websites with just ONE log-in! • Go to https://clever.com/in/issaquah • Username: First 4 letters of last name, First 3 letters of first name, Last 2 numbers of year they graduate (example: WilsRus27) • Password: Student ID • Encourage your child to spend time on Zearn (math website connected to Eureka), Keyboarding Without Tears (typing program involving some content learning), Office365 (3rd-5th grade), Quaver (music program), and more!
