  6. 06 LEGACY ISSUES 1. Inadequate capacity, infrastructure 2. Inability to diversify the energy mix 3. Inadequate incentives to attract new investment 4. Policy and regulatory framework issues e.g. lengthy & cumbersome approval journey 5. Low electricity access rate especially rural areas 6. Implementation challenges of NDPs 7. Inadequate technical skills, installations of RE, assembly etc, TEVETA 8. Over dependence on hydro electricity & biomass So, What is the problem?

  7. 07 ENERGY TRILEMMA WE ARE TRAPPED IN AN ENERGY TRILLEMMA Like many African countries we are trapped in an energy trilemma. The Energy Trilemma is defined as the need to find balance between energy reliability, affordability, and sustainability and its impact on everyday lives. 1. Energy security (Obsolete equipment, undiversified, low investment) 2. Energy sustainability (environmental considerations) 3. Energy affordability (issue of tariffs) Not easy to strike a balance to achieve net zero

  11. 10 QUESTIONS Question: Are there possible financing facilities available? Answer: Yes, financing facilities are available: 1. Banks have partnered with companies dealing in RE products 2. Village Bank options 3. Global Climate Funds, green funds, green bonds Question: What are the T & Cs Answer: Part of T&Cs funds are locked to specific purposes, payments direct to supplies etc

  12. 11 QUESTION Question: What can be done to increase access to cheaper alternative sources of energy in light of the energy challenges? Answers: 1. Curriculum updates- serious inadequate technical skills to install solar solutions across the country 2. Revisit the way incentives are being deployed, likely not reaching targeted beneficiaries 3. Force the migration, if possible, like the filament bulb to energy saving bulb migration-2016 4. Energy sector reforms- upgrades to regulatory frameworks eg standards to support EV industry, how tariff setting will work
