  11. I want to enroll in music and I.S.P.E but... I’m not an athlete. What options do I have?

  12. Your after-school activities may already qualify for I.S.P.E. • Do you already take tennis, gymnastics or even yoga classes? • Are you working toward your Black Belt in Taekwondo, Karate or Kung Fu? • Do you swim on a team or dive competitively? • Any of these, and more may qualify for I.S.P.E.

  13. Design your own I.S.P.E. Don’t have a fitness activity in place? Check out all the options offered at any of the following: • Boy’s & Girl’s Club* • YMCA* • Fitness Club • Recreation Center • Dance Studio • Ice Skating Rink • Equestrian Center Maybe you and your BFF’s have dreamed of becoming the 3 Musketeers (check out a Fencing Club) or you want to be the next Ninja Warrior (Parkour). Sign up for a Hip Hop class and show off your stuff at the next school dance. The Options are endless!

  14. Still not sure what options are available? Check out your local Boys & Girls Club or the YMCA. Both are currently working with SDUHSD to develop a before- and/or after-school “Fitness” program for SDUHSD students with impacted programs that will meet ISPE requirements. Please check with your local branch to review options. • Encinitas • Solana Beach • Carmel Valley • Paul Ecke Branch - Encinitas Financial assistance may be available for families in need.

  15. Look toward the future! College Admissions officers look for continued focus in a specific area (multiple years in the same discipline, i.e. Band/Orchestra) on High School transcripts.  Participation in outside ensembles, may or may not be considered.

  16. I.S.P.E. Requirements: Have to include all the official stuff here, sorry. • I.S.P.E. must be supervised by an “Accredited” coach or coaching organization with a $1Mil liability policy. • State of California requires completion of 400* minutes of fitness every 10 days while enrolled in I.S.P.E. and school is in session. (Not required over Thanksgiving, Winter, or Spring Breaks.) • I.S.P.E. logs are now on-line to make reporting easy. Note: Participation in Competitive Team Sports Does NOTmeet the Independent Study Criteria. However, an Accredited Coach with adequate Liability Coverage can supervise an individual program for your child. It’s up to you as to when this takes place. * Coach may assign “homework” to fulfill a portion of these hours.

  17. Did you know... • I.S.P.E. is a Pass/Fail Class • I.S.P.E. Activity Logs are only due 1 x per semester and can just be a short summary (see sample below). • I.S.P.E. Self & Coach Evaluations are due only 1 x per semester. * CCA & SDA: logs will be due 2x per semester

  18. Now that I have options... how do I change my class registration to include Music?

  19. Changing course selection for incoming 7th graders: Download the 7th Grade Class Planning Sheet available on your school website or ask your counselor for a copy. Change your class registration to include the desired music and physical education classes. Check the Year Long Elective Course Option for Music Students.

  20. Changing course selection for incoming 9th graders • CCA & SDA – You must first register for I.S.P.E. on SDUHSD site: http://sduhsd.net/parents_students/ispe.htm. Be sure to select Criteria #3 (Impacted Schedule). Contact your counselor to add Music to your course selection. If you have already selected Music as an option, notify your Counselor as to what course you’d like to select in lieu of Freshman PE. • Torrey Pines & La Costa Canyon - Music students should already be registered for I.S.M.P.E. for the 2012/13 school year. If you did not include it in your schedule and would like to do so, please contact your counselor. • Freshman enrolled in I.S.P.E. or I.S.M.P.E. must fulfill their Health class requirement by enrolling in an on-line accredited course at their own expense.

  21. Registering for I.S.P.E. • All I.S.P.E. registration is done on-line. • Go to http://sduhsd.net/parents_students/ispe.htm • Start with the video tutorial (it’s very good!), then complete the application. • If you are adding an extra period to accommodate I.S.P.E.: Pick the appropriate school and check “7th period for Music Students only.” SDA & CCA students should select the “5th period” option. • Complete the Activity, Site, and Coach/Organization information. • Check the appropriate Length of Contract • Both Terms for most schools • Spring or Fall Term for CCA & SDA students • Check the following boxes under Coach/Instructor “Method of Evaluation” • Test • Demonstration of Skills • Logs • Observation • Check Criteria #3 “impacted schedule”. • State Reason for requesting release from the school physical education program: Fill in My schedule is impacted due to music class enrollment which prevents enrollment in P.E. during the school day. • Goals: Write your own or see sample text at end of presentation. • Complete form, print copy for your records, submit on-line prior to Aug 17, 2012.

  22. Checklist and Due Dates • It is very important to change your class registration AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. If you have any questions or problems completing the forms, please contact your school counseling office. • The ISPE paperwork can be completed afterwards. Keep in mind, however, that all paperwork, both on-line and printed (Forms A-C and the Certificate of Insurance) must be submitted by August 17, 2012 at 3pm.* • Contact your music director to schedule an audition for Fall placement. • If you miss the August 17 deadline, it may still be possible for music students to make changes. Please see your counselor.

  23. Other helpful information: • Why is Music P.E. going away? • Benefits of participating in your school music program? • Sample text for Goal section of I.S.P.E. application. • Contact list for additional help.

  24. Why is Music P.E. Going Away? Music P.E. was originally intended to accommodate Marching Band programs. Music P.E. can no longer be used by non-marching groups in our district for the following reasons: • Credentials: Music Teachers can not supervise Physical Education. • Liability: Students must be supervised by a professional while participation in a District approved course. • State Mandated PE requirements: Per statute, each student enrolled in any P.E. course must participate in 400 P.E. minutes every ten days. Students self-reporting through I.S.M.P.E. or Band PE do not meet the verification standard.

  25. Did you know... SCHOOL BAND OR ORCHESTRA COULD BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP AND A COLLEGE LOAN!

  26. Did you know... Music students have the opportunity to travel, participate in honor groups, competitions, and festivals to share their talent with a broader audience.

You must participate in your school music program to qualify for Honor Groups including: • All District • All County • All Southern California • All California State Participation in any of these groups may lead to other great opportunities, including music camp and college scholarships (even for non-music majors).

  28. 9 students from SDUHSD were selected for the 2012 All California State Honor Band/Orchestra.

  29. Did you know... Orchestra, Band, and even Choir are like a big family. The friends you make and the experiences you have will help you achieve your potential in middle school. Plus, your music friends will be with you through middle school, on into high school, and beyond.
