The 80’s • 1985 -Hole in the Ozone Layer Discovered -New Coke hits market -Titanic Found • 1986 -US bombs Libya -Chernobyl • 1987 -DNA first used to convict criminals • 1988 -U.S. Shoots down Iranian Airliner • 1989 -Berlin wall falls -US president bush said he doesn’t like BROCCOLI -The 80’s ended

The Hole in the Ozone • For billions of years the ozone layer had protected life on Earth from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. • In 1985, scientists were troubled when they discovered that there was a hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctica. • 1% drop in Ozone = 2% increase in harmful UV radiation
