The Knight’s Community • Find a desk and take seat in alphabetical order • When prompted find a partner that you do not know very well • Share the following with your buddy so that you can introduce each other to the class: First and last name, place of birth, least favorite vegetable (why?), and favorite activity (why?). • Hand out forms • Go over 8th Grade letter

Knight’s Community • Classroom Procedures: • Entering classroom: quietly take seat, look for essential question, and think about answer • Bathroom and water fountain breaks – when? • Pencil sharpening – when? • Log for passes • Forms and instructions • School policies: Hallways, dress code, gum, food, and drinks • Definition of a straight, single file line • Make-up work • Working in groups (voice levels) • Computer lab guidelines (site selection, seating; voice level) • Homework • Fire and tornado drills • Teacher dismisses class – not bell

  4. The Knight’s Community • Expectations • When I am speaking, you are listening • Participate with your group (don’t be a log or a hog) • Keep track of your data journals (stays here) • Respect our classroom and students • Be ready for work each day

  6. The Knight’s Community • 8th Grade Norms and Procedures • Mission Statement • Discuss ideas and develop a mission statement with four neighbors • Classes will vote on one mission statement to be adopted by the community • Classroom norms based on Mission Statement

  7. The Knight’s Community • Create Class Mission Statement • Discuss ideas and answer questions with four neighbors: • Why are we here? • What do we have to do well together? • How will we accomplish our goals? • Class selects one mission statement to be adopted by community

  8. Knights Community Samples from last year: We the students of Mr. Leake’s 8th grade class pledge to stay focused on our learning objectives. We will achieve our goals by paying attention in class, asking questions, taking notes, and following our class norms. We will put forth our best effort at all times. We will make good choices so that we will be successful in 8th grade, be good role models for the 6th and 7th graders, and to be prepared for high school.

  10. The Knight’s Community • Team Skits • Large Group 1: the importance of education • Large Group 2: school did not go well for a student last year – How can the student be encouraged? What can the student do differently this year? • Large Group 3: demonstrate how students should enter and leave classroom

  11. The Knight’s Community 2013-2014 School Wide Mission Statement: Empower the school community and Motivate the students to be lifelong learners through interactive engagement to Succeed now and in the future
