Process • Stage 1 submission of portfolio of evidence March 2008 & meeting (London May 2008) • Preliminary review of portfolios (Jenny Griffiths) • Stage 2 clarify further assessment methodology • supplementary evidence (based on preliminary review) & commentary (Birmingham 2008) • Stage 2 involved: • Qualitative peer-review/appraisal (among developmental sites). • Q&A Panel Challenge for board /executive level

Evidence • Board papers/PH strategies & policies /BLP Business plans • HP Settings Network (Sefton): Annual reports, ToF, Lifestyle Survey across the partnership • Health Promoting Settings Protocol • Social Marketing Protocol & SM Benchmarking exercise • PH Workforce development team/Training programmes/ TNA for PCT,LA, CVS • PH/HP posts within Fire Service and CVS • JSNA/ SLAs/ LAAs

Challengesin pioneering the Partnership award • Identification of the appropriate data/evidence • Collection of evidence (not routinely documented) • Preparation of portfolio of evidence (& coordination with partners)=volume of work • Partnerships: Demonstrate achievement across all the criteria • Overlap/duplication of data • Commentary –how much is enough? • Timeframe

Lessons learnt … • Learning by doing • Effective systems for routine collection of evidence • Board level commitment to HP – key importance • PH/HP Infrastructure & workforce development • Sustainability of current and future HP activities • Building partnerships & networks for health: Health Promotion - everybody’s business • Engaging & empowering different stakeholders (advocacy) • Partnerships deliver more innovation & strengthen existing groups/networks

Why apply? • A chance to critically reflect on your progress (preliminary review; SWOT?) • Improved publicity • Opportunity to learn about and sharebest practice • Valueof qualitative peer-assessment and panel challenge: • Experience of critical appraisal • Feedback on gaps/areas for improvement and achievements

Tips for future applicants: • Time management – plan ahead (identification, collection, review of data & commentary) • Be selective about the evidence you choose (helps when matching against criteria) • Be creative about the evidence you include (e.g. business plans, progress reports, minutes of meetings etc.) • Provide an explicit summary in your commentary (assists the reviewer and the peer-review process) • Commentary: how will you demonstrate the strength of partnership work? • Consult with colleagues from RSPH!
