  1. Two words: Thinking changing. Synthesizing

  2. “Synthesizing is like putting a puzzle together. You have to sort out your thinking to put it in the right place.”

  3. “Your whole life is a synthesis. First you are a baby and you learn a little bit of stuff. Then you get older and learn more and more and more.”

  4. “ When I synthesize, my mind is changing, my ideas are changing, my thinking is changing.”

  5. Look at the picture. Do you see the face? Do you see the back of the person in a fluffy coat? Both? If you saw one thing first, then looked at it a different way and saw something else, that means you synthesized!

  6. Does the elephant have 4 legs? Or 5? When you look at this picture in different ways, you are CHANGING your THINKING--you are synthesizing!

  7. Do you see the woman’s face? Or the man on a horse slaying a dragon? Both? Is your THINKING CHANGING? Then you are synthesizing!

  8. Do you see “OPTICAL?” or “ILLUSION”?

  9. Read this aloud. Now take a closer look. Did you make a mistake? Get it now?

  10. Good or evil? Thinking changing? Synthesizing…

  11. If your THINKING CHANGES, you are synthesizing.

  12. Synthesis Information we already know + New information = Changed thinking…(SYNTHESIZING)

  13. Have you ever read a book or watched a movie with a big twist at the end? When you discover the twist, (and think, OH, WOW!) you have synthesized. When you FINALLY understand something and think, “OH, I GET IT NOW!”, that means you have synthesized. Have you ever not “gotten” a joke, then someone explained it to you, and you thought, “OH…I GET IT NOW!”? That means you have synthesized.

  14. Some Jokes • You have to be able to synthesize to “get” these jokes. You have to combine the new information (the joke) with your prior knowledge. • Two peanuts where walking down the road and one was a salted! • What is the STRONGEST letter in the alphabet? • P… Even Superman Can’t Hold It!! • How do you get a kleenex to dance? • … Put a little boogey in it.

  15. A Story… Kelly never liked dogs. She thought they were smelly and annoying. One cold winter day, Kelly was ice skating and fell through the ice. A dog that happened to be walking by ran to the edge of the ice and let Kelly grab onto his collar. The dog pulled Kelly out of the water and saved her life. Now Kelly loves dogs. How did she synthesize?

  16. Another Story… In the supermarket was a man pushing a cart that contained a screaming, bellowing baby. The gentleman kept repeating softly, "Don't get excited, Albert; don't scream, Albert; don't yell, Albert; keep calm, Albert." A woman standing next to him said, "You certainly are to be commended for trying to soothe your son Albert." The man looked at her and said, "Lady, I'm Albert.” How did you synthesize as you read the story? (How did your thinking change?)

  17. “If you don’t ever change your mind, you’re really not synthesizing.” Mitchell And in the words of Maxine….
