  3. 2. Driving forces - from “regarded as” to “documented as” • Increased marked demand for more eco-effective solutions in the building sector. • The population and welfare growth in the global society in the next 20-40 years will demand 4-10 times more eco-effective solutions. • In 1999, several Environmental Management Tools have been standardised according to ISO-14000 series (14025, 14031, 14042-43) • The Kyoto protocol implementation in European politics will make solutions with energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions more important.

  4. PROPOSED GOAL FOR THE MAIN PROJECT The main aim of the project is to take care of the business opportunities of Leca products in relation to environmental challenges in the European region, by developing, documenting and marketing Eco-effective solutions with basis in Leca products.

  5. THE MAIN GOAL SHOULD BE ACHIEVED THROUGH: • Building up expertise and capacity in companies • Contribute to the development of product oriented environmental strategies • Improve the quality and gather experiences with application of a common data models and data formats • Development of formats for and examples on communication of environmental data for Leca products and companies • Contribute to integration in educational programs about Leca products strong sides

  6. MAIN ELEMENTS IN THE PROJECT PLAN THE MAIN PROJECT IS PROPOSED TO CONSIST OF THREE MAIN ELEMENTS: • Documentation of environmental profiles of products and businesses • Communication of environmental profiles of products and businesses • Improvement of environmental profiles of products and companies (strategic development)

  7. Main philosophy behind the project • From process focus to product and systems focus • From treats to opportunities • From being a problem generator to being a problem solver

  8. Five types of results from the project • Increased knowledge and expertise in own organisation • New instruments and tools available • Better documentation of environmental aspects for internal and external applications • Real improvements in environmental profile of companies • Fair competitive situation with respect to environmental regulations and standards ==> New markets, increased market share, better prices?

  9. Environmental tools and instruments - results compared to project plan

  10. Improvements in environmental profiles by companies in the period 1997-2000 Improved data quality for SO2 emissions

  11. Total effects of improvements in the Leca International companies Equals CO2 quotas with a value of 690 000 Euro, based on a price of 8 Euro/ton

  12. Documentation and dissemination of results • All results are now available in the project web (www.sto-projects.com/leca) • The project web will be used for all presentations in the seminar (as far as possible) • The Application catalogue is available in English, and might be available in different languages and eventually on CD copies

  13. Strategic assessment of a company - Example from Laterlite • Focused on LWA production in 1997 and 2000 • Focused on four Leca products and three competing products • Focused on six important environmental aspects in total (total energy, non renewable energy, global warming, acidification, waste to landfill and material intensity) • Developed a total scale for evaluation for the six parameters, based on data from all LWA plants in Europe 1997-2000 (worst case - best case)

  14. Environmental data from LWA production - basis for the scale

  15. Strategy matrix for Leca products from Laterlite and competing products Worst Competing products Worst Laterlites Leca products

  16. Environmental challenges - lots of opportunities with Leca products (SWOT analysis) • Improved energy efficiency - keep buildings temperate in summer and winter • Take back products for recycling of materials • Use as much recycled materials as possible in “Green Leca brands” • Change energy carrier and use waste as an alternative to coal and fuel oil • Improve energy efficiency of production plant • Keep track on raw materials and content of trace elements - substitute with secondary materials where possible

  17. The table has been prepared - It is now up to you and your companies to enjoy the meal!
