  1. Space Accommodations How are the needs of astronauts in space different from their needs on earth?

  2. Temperatures & Atmospheres • Difference in Temperatures/Atmospheres • Proximity (distance) to Sun • Solar Radiation – too much can kill humans

  3. Space is HUGE!Distance b/w objects is very great!Cold and Dark! Humans sense of time and speed are not accurate. Can be depressing!

  4. MicrogravityWeightless effect on humans in space -- theabsence of gravity! Also called “Zero Gravity”. Astronaut in Space Do we experience this on Earth? Humans experience this on a roller coaster, jumping on a trampoline or off a diving board. “Free Fall” period of these activities is when you experience microgravity…..but only lasts a short period of time.

  5. What is the difference between MASS and WEIGHT? MASS WEIGHT Measured by the pull of gravity on a mass. Astronauts lose weight due to less gravity. • The amount of matter in a substance!

  6. Water and Food in Space!!! How is it different than on Earth? • Microgravity causes water to form a ball rather than a water drop. • Showering, perspiring, and drinking • Food is prepared differently and tastes differently. • What do astronauts request to make food taste better?

  7. SLEEPING IN SPACE! • Very challenging • Sleeping bags strapped to walls • Head must be restrained.

  8. OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER! • Air Supply • Water Supply • Temperature Control • Waste control

  9. How does living in space effect the human body? • Motion Sickness – nausea and dizziness • “Puffy Face Syndrome” – water moves up towards the face • Radiation – alters DNA in genes • Muscle Loss • Bone degeneration
