  4. Key Ideas and Beliefs Believed in divine law and that god punished evil and rewarded the good Achievement of “ideal justice” and “City of God” Church has a moral duty to act as a check on abuses of the state

  6. Criticism Disagrees with those philosophical schools who are not completely persuaded by eternal and divine law Religion and Politics/Law should not mix It shouldn’t be the responsibility of the Church to keep an eye on the actions o the state

  10. Key Ideas/Beliefs Believed law has 2 parts: Universal laws of nature Civil laws Natural law ensured that all people were born free (slavery was a violation) These principles were then applied to reform unjust Roman laws

Contribution Reformed Roman laws Justinian’s Code is a foundation of law in most western European countries Fairness to everyone, consideration of the people’s needs Existing governments use it for a basis of regulating new laws “Innocent till proven guilty” – Digest and Codex (C.C.R.F) 11. Any person charged with an offence has the right (d)  to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal

  16. Major Works The Summa Theologica Summa Contra Gentiles
  17. Contributions Formulated his ideas during his time period; the dark period in Europe Focused on 2 concepts particularly; God’s role as the giver of the natural law Human’s role as the recipient of the natural law
  18. Criticism Relies on human reason “Good is to be done and evil to be avoided.” Disagrees with some of Aristotle’s philosophies
