  3. Warm-up: Current Events Think of a current event or “hot topic” and discuss with a partner. Examples: ???

  4. The New Syllabus I looked at the topics you suggested and used a lot of them to make a new syllabus! Let’s take a brief look the new topics.

Today’s Class: Week 2 Topic: Political Ideologies Key skill: understand and improve your ability to express your political point of view in English. • Learn about the differences between “left” and “right”. • Learn key vocabulary and concepts related to ideology. • Discuss and make new rules for the government to follow.

  12. Take the Point of View Quiz! Read each statement and circle agree or disagree. Now discuss with a partner. Why do you agree or disagree?

Political Ideology Left Center Right • Less government power • Lower taxes • Pro-business, free-market based programs (corporations) • Religion affects politics • Tradition • Don’t trust people to change things • More government power • Higher taxes • Public programs • (health care, education, etc.) • No religion in politics • Progress • People can change things

  15. Political Ideology What’s your political point of view? If you circled mostly “agree”, you are right-wing. If you circled mostly “disagree”, you are left-wing. Most people have mixed ideologies.

  17. Right-wing? Left-wing? History: French Revolution, 1789, National Assembly “Sit in the left-wing if you want revolution, change, and if you are against the king.” “Sit in the right-wing if you don’t support revolution, change, and if you support the king.”

  19. New Rules Imagine that you are working for the government of Korea. Work with a partner. Make 10 rules or ideas for the government to follow. Give details. Example: 1. “The rich should pay higher taxes. Specifically, they should pay 90% of their income in tax to the government.”

  20. Homework Find some interesting information about next week’s topic. “Economics and Equality”

  21. Homework Research tips: • Search for news articles or read a part of a book. Don’t use wikipedia, dictionaries, etc. -The information can be in another language (Korean, Chinese, etc.) • Do not copy information from the Internet or from a book. Copying will result in minus 1 point. • Summarize the information in English using your own words. Try to write at least a paragraph.
