  2. Tuberculosis is caused by a germ called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (TB) • People with a weak immune system are more likely to get TB • TB is spread orally, and you can become infected if you breath in a cough or sneeze of an infected person Causes

  3. Tuberculosis attacks the lungs, but can also damage other parts of the body • Infection can travel through the blood to all organs of the body, which means your pleura, bones, urinary tract and sexual organs can all become infected Structures affected

  4. Coughing up mucus and/or blood • Excessive sweating especially at night • Fatigue and fever • Unintentional weight loss • Breathing difficulty, chest pain and wheezing Symptoms

  5. Antibiotics are common for treatment, such as; isoniazid (INH) • When people do not take proper drugs to treat TB for a certain period of time, the infection becomes resistant to treatment and may become deadly Treatment

TB may cause permanent lung damage • Medicines used to treat TB may cause liver problems • They can also cause change in vision, rash, and orange/ brown colored tears and urine • Once you’ve been infected with TB you are at higher risk to be infected again because TB can stay dormant for years Effects

  7. Over 8 million new cases of TB occur each year worldwide • Skin testing for TB is used in high risk populations • It was first isolated in 1882 by a German physician named Robert Koch who received the Nobel Prize for this discovery Other information
