  2. The Black Death Hits Europe

  3. What Was the Black Death? • The “Black Death” was the name given to the Bubonic Plague that struck Europe near the end of the Middle Ages

  4. How did people get the disease? • The “Black Death” was transmitted by fleas that were carried on rats • Because European cities did not have good sanitation systems, the rats were all around in cities where ever trash and debris allowed them to thrive. • The fleas were then able to transfer to human hosts and infect them. • Certain strains of the disease were infectious, so once humans got it, they could give it to other humans.

How Did the “Black Death” Get to Europe? • Genoese merchants sent their ships to the Crimea to trade with the merchants on the Silk Road • Rats carrying the fleas were able to get on board the ships there. • By the time the ships got back to the City of Genoa in Italy, the crew of the ship had been infected. The members of the crew then infected the rest of the city. • From there it spread throughout Europe.
