  1. Action Learning John Eversley, PPRE (with two of mine at the end)

  2. (Action) Learning Sets • Small groups (six to eight people) • Meet regularly • Explore topics that individual members decide on • Usually have a facilitator

  3. ALS cycle • The participants take it in turn to present a topic which is an issue of challenge for them; • The other participants ask open questions to help clarify what the issues are and to help the presenter identify options for action; • The presenter decides on a course of action; • At a meeting of the set usually 6 weeks later, progress on the planned action is reviewed

  4. Action Learning is… • Learning from yourself • Learning from observing each other • Reflection • Taking Action

  5. Action Learning isn’t … • Therapy • Quality Circles • Advice sessions • Cross Examination • Showcasing • Voyeurism •  Solving Puzzles (Puzzles are problems with one right answer or solution)

  6. Lyotard and BurgoyneKnowledge for… Speculation Practice Emancipation

  7. The Process • Describing the issue • Pause • Reprise • Questioning but no ‘why’ questions • Not advice • Presenter explores options • Presenter decides action • Implement (between sessions) • Review

  8. It sounds a bit fluffy doesn’t it?(my slides)

  9. Testimonies • I found it really beneficial in dealing with few issues at work, in particular the facilitated and objective way of receiving support/guidance to resolve the issues.  The practical action pan and others experience has really helped me. • I have found the action learning set very valuable. It allows me to consider a work issue(s) with non- judgemental colleagues with a range of knowledge and experience…This has helped me develop a strategy to deal with issues I have discussed within the group.
