  3. IFH Aims: Overarching aims of IFH at NI level are: • To improve the health status of all our people • To reduce inequalities in health

  4. IFH Objectives: • Poverty • Skills and Attitudes • Emotional Well-being • Healthy Environment • Neighbourhoods • Reduce Accidents • Healthier Choices.

  9. Context: • IFH approached to develop a programme • Multi-agency • Preventative • Chief Medical Officer described obesity as a health time-bomb • In 2002-03, 22% of Primary 1 pupils in WHSSB area were overweight/obese

  10. Programme • Six month programme targeting prevention within a home setting • Main components: • Personal development • Nutrition/oral health • Physical Activity • Target 20 families – Strabane and Castlederg

  13. Next steps • Evaluation successful – some learning points • Roll out in Strabane and Fermanagh 2005/06 • Identify mainstream/recurrent funding to deliver in most deprived areas of the WHSSB area • Place on agenda of other organisations who may have a role

  14. Western Home Safety Check Scheme Colette Brolly Health Action Zone

  15. Aim • To reduce accidents among children under 5 and older people living in areas of deprivation through provision of advice, support, practical help and equipment.

  16. Objectives • Identify gaps in provision of safety equipment for families with young children and older people. • Prioritise areas of greatest need. • Carry out Home Safety Checks. • Provide and fit safety/security equipment in people’s homes. • Establish a mechanism to assist with simple household repairs. • Provide information and advice on home safety.

Partners in the Project • Western Health Action Zone • Investing for Health Partnership • Five District Councils in the Western Board • Western Group Environmental Health • RoSPA • Local Home Accident Prevention Groups • Local Statutory, Community and Voluntary Groups. • Fire and Rescue Service

  19. Outputs to Date • Over 1500 referrals to scheme • 1000 checks carried out • Almost 3000 pieces of equipment provided • 350 onward referrals made • Ongoing Information Sessions/Presentations to Groups
