  2. Interesting Facts • He was born on February 12th 1809, and died April 15th 1865 at the age of fifty six. • He had deep depression, even though he would frequently tell stories and jokes to friends and family. • He was the tallest U.S president at 6ft 4 inches. • Lincoln disliked killing and harming animals, even for food • 1st Republican President

The Lincoln-Douglass Debates • In 1858, the little known Lincoln ran against Stephen Douglass for his Senate seat. • The majority of the debates were about popular sovereignty in the western territories. 10. The Gettysburg Address • Turn to pg. 361 in your book to read the Gettysburg Address. • It is really short and only took Lincoln 2 minutes to speak. • Discussion Questions: • What reasons did Lincoln give in the Address for why the Union was fighting the Civil War? • Why do you think historians said this speech “remade America”?

  11. Lincoln Suspends Habeas Corpus • Lincoln dealt harshly with dissent in the Union • During the Civil War Lincoln suspended the right of Habeas Corpus • Habeas Corpus is your right to not be arrested without being charged or given a trial.

  12. Lincoln Suspends Habeas Corpus • Over 13,000 suspected Confederate Sympathizers were thrown in jail without trial!

  13. The 13th Amendment • Lincoln believed the only way to permanently end slavery was through a constitutional amendment • The 13th Amendment, which outlawed slavery, was passed after months of debate in Congress.
