Health economics (Higgins et al 2004) 2001, Canada, health costs High work-family spillover: C$2.8 billion Mental and physical health impairments (for self & family functioning) Organisational costs Turnover intention, performance effectiveness Reduced marital and life satisfaction (Kossek & Ozeki 1999; Allen et al. 2000) 4

Existing data sources Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey (HILDA), Melbourne University ‘Growing up in Australia’ Longitudinal Study of Australia Children (LSAC), Australian Institute of Family Studies Australian Survey of Social Attitudes (AuSSA), ANU 6 Excellent data sources exist which cover range of issues related to work and family life HILDA and LSAC address issues around the work-life relationship, primarily focused on workers with parenting responsiblities AuSSA also has questions related to work; scope is broad and only a few questions focus directly on work-life issues Use these data sets ourselves – felt there was a need for a data collection main focus on work-life issues, to complement these existing projects.Excellent data sources exist which cover range of issues related to work and family life HILDA and LSAC address issues around the work-life relationship, primarily focused on workers with parenting responsiblities AuSSA also has questions related to work; scope is broad and only a few questions focus directly on work-life issues Use these data sets ourselves – felt there was a need for a data collection main focus on work-life issues, to complement these existing projects.
