Emailed directly to you-check attendance-check grades-check missing assignments NOTE FOR ENG 4: Although your child is a senior and is spreading his/her wings, he/she still needs your support…even if you are a “silent” partner. PLEASE check attendance and grades (ESPECIALLY 2nd semester!)

  4. About Mrs. Bly: • I moved to Palos Verdes in 6th grade, & I’m a graduate of Ridgecrest and Peninsula High School (formerly called Rolling Hills High School). I currently live in PVE. • B.A. in English, UCI • M.A. in Education, Belmont University • I’ve lived in 5 different states • I have 4 children (ages 14-23); 2 graduated from PVHS 2015 & 2018

  9. Curriculum continued… • Vocabulary- 12 units (3 per quarter plus a midterm) • Class presentations (often in groups) • Perform, read scenes out loud • Participate in discussions, debates, and Socratic seminars

Writing • Daily journals • At least one essay for each unit • Required to type all writing assignments • Students should have daily access to the Internet, a working computer, and a printer • No excuses for not having a major assignment on time (everything is posted way in advance & completed – it’s already stamped)

  11. Overall grade: • 5% PART: Participation • 20% Classwork/homework: Class work (includes journals and homework) • 20% Quizzes: Reading and vocab quizzes • 25% Writing: Writing assignments & Content grades • 30% TEST: Tests & Finals

Citizenship Grades • Participation grade factors into academic grade: 5% • see Class Procedures (in Class Syllabus & Procedures folder) • This is an easy way to see how your child is doing in the classroom. I document all participation points. • Cell phones are kept in the holder in the front of the class • Students may access phones during class during our short break

Grading Details • Completion points AND Comprehension points • Literature packet: stamps=completion points • One chapter will be picked by Mrs. Bly to grade for comprehension/content= writing grade • No late homework stamps, but can put in collection packet for partial credit. • Stamp = 5pts (on time) • No stamp but completed= 3 pts. (late) • Not turned in at all=0 points • Late major assignments(essay & or Table of Contents Packet) = -10% • Aeries.net to check students’ grades (updated weekly)

Cheating • 1st incident: “0” on the assignment; administration referral (perhaps Saturday school); parent notified; possible “U” in citizenship • 2nd incident: same as above plus administration referral & administration will contact parents • Cheating includes plagiarism, copying homework, unauthorized collaboration, forgery, cheating on tests/quizzes • I use Turnitin.com to dissuade plagiarism

  17. How you can help your student succeed in this class: • Make sure the student has all his/her needed materials • Make sure your student has access to a computer, the Internet, a functional printer, and a flash drive. (if printer breaks, student can email me) • Read along with your student and/or discuss what your student is reading with him/her. • Let me know if personal/home problems are affecting school work • Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
