Today’s Notes: Nov. 10, 2010 Chapter 7: Pronouns I. Pronouns A. A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. -They “Stand In” for a noun. B. A pronoun keeps the language you are using from being repetitive.
Think about this… • Actors and actresses who are about to take a REALLY hard fall usually stop and yell, “Stand in!” • This means that someone else who resembles the star is going to have to tumble into a waterfall, jump from a burning potato chip truck, or leap from an exploding helicopter.
Pronouns are like stunt doubles! • Pronouns do the same for nouns. • When a noun is about to wear itself out in a sentence, a pronoun can hop in! • When this happens, the sentence reads better, the noun takes a break, and the reader is happier!
Here is a paragraph that could use some more pronouns! Meg stepped to the end of the diving board and looked down. Meg then turned back and looked longingly at Meg’s brother, who was perched safely on the ladder, smiling. Meg knew that this was it. One! Two! Three! Meg ran to the end of the board, leaped, tucked, and made one and one half turns. Meg then straightened out like an arrow and hit the water cleanly. Meg knew Meg had made the best dive of Meg’s life!
Here is the same paragraph, with pronouns standing in for some nouns: Meg stepped to the end of the diving board and looked down. She then turned back and looked longingly at her brother, who was perched safely on the ladder, smiling. Meg knew that this was it. One! Two! Three! She ran to the end of the board, leaped, tucked, and made one and one half turns, then straightened out like an arrow and hit the water cleanly. She knew she had made the best dive of her life!

Learning about Pronouns is easy! • Think about it this way… • Can you name every noun? Verb? Adjective? Adverb? • Pronouns are a lot easier because their aren’t a lot of them. • The following page has some common pronouns. Memorize these and you have it made!
Think about it this way: • Pronouns save us a lot of time and space with our writing. • Let’s say a good friend has asked you to sign her yearbook. You have a writing space about the size of a postage stamp! • What if you couldn’t use pronouns? • You had to write everyone’s name that you use instead! Could you really make your message fit?
