  1. The Implementation Plan of the Arctic Climate Systeme Study (ACSYS) requested for establishment of an Arctic Precipitation Data Archive (APDA). APDA has been established in 1996 within the Global Precipitation Climatology Center (GPCC) at the Deutscher Wetterdienst. APDA focuses on the period 1950-2000 and contains both daily and monthly as well as uncorrected and corrected precipitation and snow depth data from all observation stations (as far as available) within the Arctic drainage basin.

  2. ACSYS APDA: Location of “Arctic“ SYNOP stations in GPCC‘s data bank

  3. ACSYS APDA: Sampling error of monthly precipitation calculated for Canada and Finland on 1° gridboxes using a Monte-Carlo technique.

  4. ACSYS APDA: Decrease of the number GTS-SYNOP stations being available in the Yenisey hydrological catchment area after 1994

  5. Comparison of GPCC‘s gridded precipitation data sets and GRDC‘s river discharge data (figure of 1999) GPCC‘s analysis period startet with the year 1986, while GRDC‘s collection is mostly based on earlier data deliveries. GPCC is going to extend its data collection and analysis for the 20th century retrospectively.

  6. APDA Research and Development Project Phase 2 • (April 2002 – March 2005) • The aims of this project (beginning in Sep 2002, funded by the German Polar Research Programme) are: • Updating of the archive of precipitation and snow depth by additional datafrom surface networks, satellite data and model results (ERA-40). • Development of a method for using snow depth data for quality-control of precipitation data and complementation of precipitation analysis. • Quality assessment based on statistical studies for the data being hold in the archive. • Further development of the method for correction of precipitation data with regard to the systematic gauge measurement error. • Verification of precipitation predicted by NWP re-analyses of ERA-40. • Development of an improved large-scale precipitation climatology for the Arctic catchment area based on both precipitation and snow depth data. • Continuation of the Archive’s service for ACSYS participants.
